Robert Harrington - Barton County Economic Developer attended the annual Fall Missouri Economic Development Councils Meeting again this year. Harrington, who was recently appointed to the Board of Directors for MEDC, says this is an opportunity for professional economic developers to be briefed on efforts of the State of Missouri, attend specialized classes to enhance skills, and to network with other professionals from around the State.
There is a camaraderie among Missouri Economic Developers so the networking opportunities are impressive. Missourian's stick up for Missourian's and the competition is fierce enough between states without developing rivalries between each other. Projects that are looking at multiple locations in Missouri almost always pare down based on suitability of the site or available needed resources as the incentives offered by the State are consistent no matter the location. This helps to foster an environment of Statewide economic growth.
The Missouri Economic Development Council uses a Program of Work which includes:
-
Professional Development -- MEDC focuses on expanding the educational and career opportunities for MEDC members through the establishment of a multi-level professional development system.
-
Public Policy -- MEDC actively participates in the public policy process by serving as a trusted resource on issues related to community and economic development.
-
